My name is Brittany Schiavone. I am a 27-year-old woman thriving with Down syndrome and I #chooseREAL. That means I celebrate being who I am—how I walk, talk, look, and feel. I’m the founder of Brittany’s Baskets of Hope, a nonprofit that offers resources, guidance, and lots of love to families welcoming a new baby with Down syndrome into their lives.
I want people with Down syndrome—and all girls and boys—to know that no matter how they’re born or who they are, they really, really can do anything. I want them to know that it’s important for them to live courageously and joyfully as themselves because we all have purpose—everyone has a unique talent or gift to offer our world.
I feel like I’m the boss in my life and I get to do what I want—bowling, movies, cooking, making smoothies, acting, and work. And I’m a leader with my nonprofit. I want every baby with Down syndrome and every parent of a baby with Down syndrome to know that they can grow up to be leaders, dancers, actors, chefs, partners, and friends, too—anything they want to be. That’s right, Down syndrome hasn’t stopped me! In fact, it’s part of what makes me, ME. When I #chooseREAl, I choose to show the world who I really am, and that means celebrating my beauty and the beauty of ALL people. Because, together, we rise.
