You can’t stop the waves 🌊 from coming, but you can learn to surf 🏄🏽♀️.
Storms are a part of life, sometimes like a flash flood, they come out of no where. We can feel like those waves just keep crashing, that we can hardly keep afloat.
So here’s a few surfing tips to ride out the storms:
1. CHECK YOUR PERSPECTIVE AND FOCUS. What are you giving all your attention to? The storm or the sun rays streaming through? There is always something we can learn, some good around us, something to be thankful for. And whatever we focus on is what we experience. So focus on what you want to experience. ⠀
2. DON’T FILL YOUR FEELINGS, BUT FEEL THEM. I mean, let’s try not to escape our raw and painful feelings but avoiding them and filling them with entertainment, stuff, food, busyness, achievements etc. Take space to feel them, express them (if you need to tell someone, write it down, cry it out). Release those feelings so they’re not bottled up inside.
3. BE INTENTIONAL ABOUT ASKING YOURSELF WHAT YOU NEED. Do you need to talk it out? Do you need to do something you love? Do you need to rest and pull back? What do you need in this season?
4. INVITE OTHERS INTO YOUR JOURNEY. I know it can be hard to share what’s going on. You can feel like a burden, or what will others think, or fear to let others in. But we are not meant to carry this storm alone. Share the load with trusted friends or reach out for professional help. Just don’t keep it all to yourself. Lighten your load.
5. CHECK WHAT YOU’RE STANDING ON. Is it fear, bitterness, self-loathing, striving to prove yourself, comparison, pride etc. These things are a flimsy surfboard, you’ll definitely crash in the waves. So let’s find our footing on solid ground. And stand on grace, love, worthiness, belonging, courage, faith, humility, hope etc.⠀
